The ESAT is a modular admission test used by Cambridge, Imperial, Oxford and UCL for engineering and science programmes. We work on advanced problem solving in the modules your course requires.

Most candidates take the 3 modules their course requires (120 min in total). For example, Imperial Engineering: Mathematics 1 + Mathematics 2 + Physics. Calculators and dictionaries are not allowed; module choices can't be changed on test day.
Scoring and test dates
Scoring
- Each module is scored separately from 1.0 to 9.0, to one decimal place.
- There is no pass mark; wrong answers don't lose points.
Test dates
- For 2027 entry: sitting 1, 12–16 October 2026; sitting 2, 4–8 January 2027.
- Registration for the January sitting opens on 26 October 2026 and closes on 21 December 2026.
- Cambridge and Oxford applicants must take the October sitting; the test can be taken once per application cycle.
- Results: 16 November 2026 (October sitting) and 8 February 2027 (January sitting).
Latest updates
- The ESAT was first held in October 2024 (for 2025 entry).
- From 2027 entry, Oxford uses UAT-UK tests for its engineering, physics and biomedical programmes.
