Scoring
- Correct answer +1.5, wrong answer −0.4, blank 0; the maximum score is 90.
- Rankings are published nationally; places are allocated according to preferred universities.
Test dates
- The IMAT 2026 exam took place at the end of September 2026; registration was through Universitaly from late August to early September.
- The 2027 exam date is announced by the Ministry in the summer.
Latest updates
- From 2025/26, Italian-taught medicine programmes use a 'filter semester' model instead of an entrance exam.
- The IMAT for English-taught programmes was still held as a separate exam in 2025 and 2026.

Is Italian language proficiency required for IMAT?
No. The exam and entire degree curriculum are conducted in English.
Which universities use IMAT?
University of Milan, Sapienza Rome, Bologna, Pavia, Padova, Tor Vergata, and other public medical schools.
How many questions are in the IMAT and how long is it?
60 multiple-choice questions in 100 minutes: 23 biology, 15 chemistry, 13 physics and mathematics, 5 logical reasoning and 4 reading skills and general knowledge. The test is paper-based.
How is the IMAT scored?
A correct answer earns +1.5, a wrong answer −0.4 and a blank answer 0. The maximum score is 90, so deciding which questions to leave blank is part of the strategy.
When is the IMAT held?
The test is usually held in September. Registration opens on Universitaly between late August and early September; the exact date is announced by the Ministry in the summer.
