UCAT frequently asked questions
When should I begin UCAT preparation?
Preparation is recommended 8–12 weeks prior to your test date during the summer testing window.
How does UCAT differ from legacy UKCAT?
They are the same admissions test: UKCAT was renamed UCAT in 2019. The format has changed since then; from 2025 the Abstract Reasoning subtest was removed.
Which universities require the UCAT?
Most medical and dental schools in the United Kingdom. Australia and New Zealand use a separate test, UCAT ANZ.
What is a good UCAT score?
Target scores vary by university and year. Many schools also expect SJT Band 1–2, and competitive schools look for a total clearly above the average.
How many times can I take the UCAT?
Once per testing cycle. Your result is valid only for that year's applications.
Where is the UCAT taken?
On computer at authorised test centres worldwide. Check the current centre list on ucat.ac.uk when you register.
