TARA preparation and private tutoring
The TARA is a non-subject-specific admission test of critical thinking, problem solving and writing. It is used for many programmes at Oxford and UCL.

Scoring and test dates
Scoring
- Critical Thinking and Problem Solving are each scored from 1.0 to 9.0.
- The Writing Task isn't scored; the text is sent to the universities you apply to.
Test dates
- For 2027 entry: sitting 1, 12–16 October 2026; sitting 2, 4–8 January 2027.
- Oxford applicants must take the October sitting.
- Results: 16 November 2026 and 8 February 2027.
Latest updates
- The TARA was first held in October 2025.
- From 2027 entry, Oxford uses the TARA for programmes such as PPE, Economics & Management and Experimental Psychology.

TARA frequently asked questions
Which skills does TARA assess?
The current UAT-UK TARA assesses academic reasoning through Critical Thinking, Problem Solving and Writing Task modules.
Which universities require TARA?
Oxford (PPE, Economics & Management, Experimental Psychology, Human Sciences and others) and a range of UCL programmes use TARA. Requirements vary by programme and cycle, so check each target programme's current admissions page.
How long is TARA?
Each of the three modules lasts 40 minutes, 120 minutes in total. Critical Thinking and Problem Solving have 22 multiple-choice questions each. The test is taken on computer at Pearson VUE centres.
Is the Writing Task scored?
No. Critical Thinking and Problem Solving are each scored from 1.0 to 9.0. The Writing Task is not scored; your essay is sent to the universities you apply to.
When is TARA held?
There are two sittings per admissions cycle, in October and January. Oxford applicants must take the October sitting. Results are released in November and February.
